I wonder if the freewheeling SAAB 96 was chosen specifically to make this scene even remotely plausible.
Most any other car would be stopped soon enough by simply turning off the ignition. Of course neither of them thinks to pull the parking brake either, so maybe the 96 was chosen simply because it was a car rather than to maintain realism.
Also if you’ve never seen this movie - go watch it. It’s amazing.

One of the best movies from my childhood.
I never thought about why the SAAB was the car.
